Quick answer: Log in to SARS eFiling, open Maintain SARS Registered Details (the RAV01 form), update the bank account section and submit. Individuals can also use the express option to update their Personal Income Tax bank account. SARS confirms the change with a one-time PIN and validates the account with your bank before it takes effect. If you're not on eFiling, or the online validation fails, you may need to book a branch appointment and bring supporting documents.

Before you start

  • The account must be in the taxpayer's own name. A company's refunds are paid into a bank account in the company's registered name, not a director's personal account.

  • Your security contact details must be current. SARS sends the OTP to your registered cellphone or email. If both have changed, sort that out first.

  • Have proof of the account ready, such as a recent bank statement or a stamped bank letter that meets SARS's document requirements, in case SARS asks for it.

Changing your personal bank account

  1. Log in to eFiling.

  2. Use the option to update your Personal Income Tax bank account, or go to Maintain SARS Registered Details to open the RAV01.

  3. Update the bank details: bank, branch code, account number and account type.

  4. Submit and enter the OTP SARS sends you.

  5. Wait for SARS to validate the account with your bank.

You can also use Profile Management on the SARS MobiApp, if the option is available on your profile.

Changing your company's bank account

A company's details are managed by its registered representative at SARS, usually a director.

  1. The registered representative logs in to eFiling and opens the company's profile.

  2. Go to Maintain SARS Registered Details (RAV01) for the company.

  3. Update the bank account details. The account must be in the company's name exactly as registered with CIPC.

  4. Submit and confirm with the OTP.

  5. Upload supporting documents if SARS requests them.

If the company doesn't have a registered representative, that must be sorted out first. See our SARS registered representative service.

When SARS needs more

SARS may ask you to verify the change, especially if the automatic bank validation doesn't match. Typically you'll need:

  • your ID (and the company's registration documents for a company);

  • a bank statement or stamped bank letter meeting SARS's document requirements, showing the account holder's name and account number;

  • proof of address, if requested.

If you're not registered on eFiling, you can visit a SARS branch, but book an appointment first. Some changes can only be done at a branch, including certain legal entity cases. Customs and excise clients update their banking details at a SARS Customs branch, not on eFiling.

Why it matters

SARS only pays refunds into a validated account. If your bank details are wrong or not yet validated, your assessment can show a refund due but no money arrives until the account is sorted out.

Watch out for scams

SARS doesn't send links asking you to "confirm" or update your bank details by email or SMS. Only update your details by logging in to eFiling or the SARS MobiApp yourself, and never share your OTP with anyone.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for SARS to update my bank details?

Often quickly when the online validation succeeds. It takes longer if SARS asks for supporting documents or a branch visit.

Can my refund be paid into someone else's account?

Generally no. SARS pays refunds into an account in the taxpayer's own name. Third-party accounts are only allowed in limited cases.

Can my accountant change my bank details?

In limited cases, with the right mandate. Usually the taxpayer or the company's registered representative makes the change.

Can I change my company's bank details on the MobiApp?

Company changes are normally done on eFiling through the registered representative's profile.
