For

South African suppliers wanting to do business with government

The Central Supplier Database (CSD) is National Treasury's single, national register of everyone who supplies goods or services to government. Since 2016, no organ of state may procure from a supplier that isn't on the CSD — so if you want to bid for tenders, be added to a department's supplier list, or simply get paid by a government client, CSD registration comes first.

Registration links your company's CIPC, SARS, banking and B-BBEE details into one verified profile, and issues a unique supplier number and MAAA code. Get a detail wrong and your profile shows as non-compliant, which blocks payments. Smartbook registers you correctly, verifies your details, and delivers a clean, compliant CSD profile.

When you need this

Register on the CSD when you:

  • Want to bid for government tenders or quotations
  • Need to be added to a department's supplier list
  • Have a government client that requires a CSD number to pay you
  • Are asked for your MAAA supplier number
  • Need your tax and B-BBEE status verified for procurement

Common questions

What is the CSD?

The Central Supplier Database is National Treasury's national register of suppliers to government. Since 2016, government departments and entities may only procure from suppliers listed on the CSD, so it's the entry ticket to doing business with the state.

What is a MAAA number?

When you register on the CSD, you're issued a unique supplier number that starts with 'MAAA'. Government departments use it to identify you, add you to supplier lists, and process payments.

How long does CSD registration take?

Around 10 working days once we have your details. The main variable is making sure your tax and banking details verify cleanly, which we check before finalising.

Why does my CSD profile show as non-compliant?

Usually because your SARS tax status is non-compliant or your details don't match across CIPC, SARS and banking. We resolve mismatches and can sort your tax clearance so your profile shows green.

Do I need B-BBEE for the CSD?

You can register without it, but adding your B-BBEE status strengthens your profile for procurement, since empowerment credentials count in tender scoring. We can also help you get a B-BBEE affidavit.

Is CSD the same as being tender-ready?

CSD registration is a core requirement, but tenders often also need tax clearance, a Letter of Good Standing and sometimes CIDB. We can bundle these so you're genuinely tender-ready, not just listed.
